Saquaro

Saquaros resemble spiny central columns from which stem arms reaching to heaven.

Only growing one centimeter per year for the first decade, Saquaros pick up the pace later in life, often living well over a century. With fruit and flowers, many animals find this prickly plant to make a pleasant home. Birds live inside; bats pollinate outside. Living in a hot and dry environment renders finding and storing water a top priority. Making it possible to take in three thousand liters in a little over a week, the specialized roots of a Saquaro contain salt and spread around the cactus to absorb as much water as it can as soon as it can.

Fun Facts: The amount of time it takes a saquaro to grow a side arm is between seventy and eighty years.
