Walrus Changing color throughout its life, the walrus is born dark brown and may be pink as an adult. With big tusks and a bulky body, walruses weigh between one and two tons. Around the tusks, walruses have whiskers which can reach twelve inches in length. When swimming in cold water, the walrus can look white since its blood vessels constrict. In order to sleep, walruses have an air sac below their throats which allows them to bob in water. Living for five decades, walruses meet to mate on crowded coasts. Female walruses give birth to young that weigh between one hundred and two hundred pounds! Diving to depths of hundreds of feet below the surface, this pinniped (fin-footed animal) can stay submerged for thirty minutes in search of its favorite snack, clams. Fun Facts: Walruses are insulated with a layer of blubber that is thicker than one note card is tall. |
